Coleburn Distillery(21 Sep 2007)
ElginのバスステーションでDufftown行のバスに乗り込む。Coleburnまでのチケットを買うと、
"蒸留所を撮りに行くのか？"
と運転手さんに聞かれた。
彼も写真が趣味のようで私のカメラについていろいろと聞いてくる。
Coleburnで降りる時、
"この道を行けば蒸留所が見えてくる"
と教えてくれた。
木々に囲まれた道を歩いていくと、Charles Doigデザインの美しいキルンが見えてきた。
I got in the bus to Dufftown at Elgin bus station and bought a ticket to Coleburn.
The bus driver asked me,
"Do you take photos of distillery?"
He asked me about my cameras. I thought his hobby would be taking photos.
When I got off in Coleburn, he said,
"Go this way. So you can see a distillery."
I walked the way among trees, and then I saw the beautiful kiln designed by Charles Doig.

River Speyは釣りの名所。Aberlourの川岸にはベンチやロッドスタンドが設置され、釣り人の姿も多い。
Aberlourを発つ日、バスまで時間があったのでDailuaine蒸留所へ行こうと川沿いのSpeyside Wayへ向かうと平日にもかかわらず数人の釣り人がロッドを振っていた。釣り上げるシーンを期待したけど結局観ることはできなかった。
River Spey is a famous place of the fishing. There are some facilities for angleres in the river bank of Aberlour.
On the day when I left Aberlour, I had time to a bus. So I went to Dailuaine Distillery.
When I walked on Speyside Way, several anglers were in the river and waving a fishing rod in spite of weekdays morning.
I expected to watch the scene to catch, but I was not able to watch it after all.

Dailuaine Distillery(20 Sep 2007)
Aberlourの町から南西へ約3km、風景を楽しみながらSpeyside Wayを歩くにはちょうどいい場所にあるDailuaine蒸留所は1852年の創業。1863年に開通したStrathspey RailwayのDailuaine駅の近くにある。
Alfred Barnardの著書にはキルンのある蒸留所のイラストが掲載されているが1960年頃の改装で取り壊されたと思われる。Alfred Barnardによるとスコットランドで最も傾斜した屋根を持つ高さのある建物でコークスを使うことなくピートだけでモルトに繊細な香りを与えると記述されている。
そんな特徴的なキルン、見たかった。
Dailuaine Distillery lies about 3km south east of Aberlour, it is a good distance for walking on Speyside Way and enjoying sceneries. It was established in 1852 near Dailuaine Halt, station of Strathspey Railway opened in 1863.
There was a unique malt kiln in the distillery. According to The Whisky Distilleries of The United Kingdom wrtten by Alfred Barnard, the kiln was high building with steepest pitch roof in Scotland. It gave the malt a delicate aroma using peats only, not to use cokes.
However, the malt kiln would be demolished during a renovation around 1960.

Mortlach Distillery(20 Sep 2007)
ウィスキーの聖地、Dufftownで一番歴史のあるMortlach蒸留所。その創業は1823年でGlenlivet蒸留所やMacallan蒸留所と同じ世代となる。
古い建物もあり、キルンのある建物が2棟残っていていろいろと写真を撮ってみたいけどビジターの扱いは最悪。まぁUD系の蒸留酒はどこでもそうだけど。
キルンのある建物は使ってないだろうからビジター用の設備を作ればお客さん来ると思うけど。
こういう蒸留所を訪れると鳥井信治郎さんの偉大さを思い出す。日本に帰ってから山崎蒸留所行こうかな。
Dufftown, the capital of whisky. There are 6 distilleries, 3 lost distilleries. Mortlach Distillery is the oldest distillery in Dufftown, established in 1823. There are old buildings, include 2 kilns with pagoda roof.
Tourists of the whisky enthusiast would be interested in Mortlach Distillery. However, they do not admit the entrance of the visitor. Though I think that many visitors would come to distillery same as some Japanese whisky distilleries if they have facilities for visitors.
When I visited such a distillery I reminded greatness of Shinjiro Torii, founder of Suntory Whisky. I wanted to go to Yamazaki Distillery after I go back to Japan.

Benrinnes Distillery(19 Sep 2007)
Benrinnes蒸留所は1826年に現在地から1km南東に建てられていたが1829年の洪水によって倒壊。その後1834年に現在の場所に再建され、蒸留所名がLyne of Ruthrieとなった。
その後の操業も順調とは言えず、何度か所有者が変わる中、1864年頃までには蒸留所名はBenrinnesに戻っている。
1896年には火事によって焼失し、再建されているが第一次大戦後のウィスキー不況のために経営は悪化。最終的に多くの蒸留所と同じ様にDCL社(UD社の前身)に買収された。
1955年から始まった近代化改築で古い建物は取り壊され、味気ない工場のような外観になっている。
周りの風景とはあまりなじんでないようにも思えるけど、慣れたらそうでもないのかな。
Benrinnes Distillery was built to the 1km southeast from the present location in 1826, but it was destroyed by a flood of 1829. The distillery was rebuilt at the current place in 1834 and named “Lyne of Ruthrie”.
However, The operation of the distillery was not favorable after that, the owner had changed a couple of time. Meanwhile, the distillery name returned to “Benrinnes” by 1864.
The distillery was destroyed by fire in 1896, and rebuilt. But management turned worse because of recession of whisky industry after the WW1. Finally, it was sold to DCL(later United Distillers) in 1920s, same as many whisky distilleries in Scotland.
Benrinnes Distillery was rebuild and renovated in 1955-1956, it has become the appearance such as a dreary factory.
