Dailuaine Distillery(20 Sep 2007)
Aberlourの町から南西へ約3km、風景を楽しみながらSpeyside Wayを歩くにはちょうどいい場所にあるDailuaine蒸留所は1852年の創業。1863年に開通したStrathspey RailwayのDailuaine駅の近くにある。
Alfred Barnardの著書にはキルンのある蒸留所のイラストが掲載されているが1960年頃の改装で取り壊されたと思われる。Alfred Barnardによるとスコットランドで最も傾斜した屋根を持つ高さのある建物でコークスを使うことなくピートだけでモルトに繊細な香りを与えると記述されている。
そんな特徴的なキルン、見たかった。
Dailuaine Distillery lies about 3km south east of Aberlour, it is a good distance for walking on Speyside Way and enjoying sceneries. It was established in 1852 near Dailuaine Halt, station of Strathspey Railway opened in 1863.
There was a unique malt kiln in the distillery. According to The Whisky Distilleries of The United Kingdom wrtten by Alfred Barnard, the kiln was high building with steepest pitch roof in Scotland. It gave the malt a delicate aroma using peats only, not to use cokes.
However, the malt kiln would be demolished during a renovation around 1960.

幹線道路から脇道に入ってしばらく歩いても何も見えない。この道を行けば蒸留所への近道のはず。そろそろ何か見えてもいいんだけど・・・よく見ると煙突の先のような物が見えてきた。
Cragganmore蒸留所はRiver Spey沿いに隠れるように建っていた。1869年の創業当時、この周辺には200ぐらいの非合法の蒸留所があったらしい。
1863年に開通したStrathspey Railwayの側に建設され、専用の引込線も持っていた。River Speyに沿って走るCragganmoreの樽を運ぶ列車は素晴らしい風景だっただろう。
I entered the sideway at the main road and walked for a while. It should be the shortcut to a Cragganmore Distillery if I went this way. However, I saw nothing… After a while, I watched the thing such as the point of the chimney.
The Cragganmore distillery was built to hide along River Spey. At the time of the establishment of 1869, there seemed to be around 200 illegal distilleries in these outskirts.
It was built near Strathspey Railway opened in 1863 and they had the exclusive lead-in. The train carrying a barrel of Cragganmore single malt whisky running along River Spey would be splendid scenery.

The Way to Hogwarts(8 May 2006)
英国は世界で最初に鉄道が開通した国として知られている。そして現在英国で最も有名な鉄道はWest-Highland Railwayだろう。Fort William～Mallaig間の山間部をゆっくりと走る列車は日に3本程しか運行されないローカル線だけど6～10月の観光シーズンにThe Jacobite Steam Trainという蒸気機関車が運行される。これがHogwarts ExpressとしてHarry Potterの撮影に使用されている。
最大の見せ場は何と言ってもGlenfinnan Bridge。2作目の”秘密の部屋”ではHarryとRonの乗った自動車が追いかけられるシーンが印象的。この橋を通る時、カメラを手にしない乗客はいなかった。
UK is known as a first country which started to operate a railway. And now, I think the most famous rail way would be West-Highland railway in UK. It’s a local line, there are about 3 trains a day and runs slowly in the mountains between Fort William and Mallaig. However, The Jacobite Steam Train is run during summer tourist season, June to October. That train is used in the movie “Harry Potter” as the Hogwarts Express.
The climax of this railway is Glenfinnan Bridge. The scene of second Harry Potter movie, “Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secret “, which the car Harry and Ron rode was chased by Hogwarts Express on the bridge, is really impressive.
When a train went through the bridge, most passengers took a camera.

Muir of Ord(2)
Glen Ord Distillery(10 May 2003)
Dingwallからバスに乗ってMuir of Ordまでのチケットを求める。蒸留所へ行くことを伝えると、幹線道路から蒸留所方面へ行く支道との分かれ道で降ろしてくれた。そこから少し歩き、大きなOrd Maltingの建物の横を過ぎると蒸留所のキルンが見えてきた。近づくと駐車場から黒い影が一斉に茂みへ向かう。野うさぎ達を驚かしてしまったようだ。土曜日なので人も少なく、駐車場でミーティングでもしていたのかな。
I got on a bus to Inverness and bought a ticket to Muir of Ord, and I told the bus driver that I went to Glen Ord Distillery. The driver stopped the bus at a junction of a branch road to distillery. I walked for about 10 minutes after I got off the bus. I passed beside the large building of Glen Ord maltings, then I came in sight a malt kiln and warehouse. Suddenly, something were scattered to a bush. I seemed to surprise wild rabbits.. They may have had a meeting at a car park.

Balbleir Distillery(8 May 2003)
Eddertonの町はずれの線路沿いに位置するBalbleir蒸留所。その歴史は古く、創業は1790年となっているがそれ以前から密造は行われていた。また、周辺はピート層に覆われ、ウィスキー造りに適した地域でもある。
北ハイランドの蒸留所はポットスティルに特徴のあるものが多い。Balbrair蒸留所のスティルは太い、丸みを帯びた形状で同地区のGlenmorangie蒸留所とは非常に対象的だ。
Balbrair Distillery lies on the outskirts of Edderton, near North Highland Lines Railway. They have an old history, it was established in 1790. However, illicit whisky had been made before. There is enough peat and water. It is a good area for making whisky.
Distilleries in Northern Highland have a unique shaped pot still. Pot still of Balbrair Distillery is thick, rounded shape. It is in contrast with a pot still of Glenmorangie Distillery.
