Even the prosperous inevitably decay(22 Sep 2007)

When I saw the huge ruins of Elgin Cathedral, I imagined the best period of the Cathedral and I reminded opening lines of Tale of the Heike that I had memorized when I was a high school student.
The sound of the bell of Gion-shoja, rings with the transience of all things.
The color of the flowers of paired sal trees, shows the truth that all glories must fade.

    Coleburn Distillery(21 Sep 2007)

Coleburn Distillery is not far from A941 which is a main road connected from Elgin to Craigellachie, on a map. I had gone along it by bus several times. I thought I would be able to watch Coleburn Distillery on the bus, so I looked for the the distillery every time.
However, I understood that anyone wasn’t able to see Coleburn Distillery on the bus, it was surrounded by many trees.

    Coleburn Distillery(21 Sep 2007)

    Coleburn

I got in the bus to Dufftown at Elgin bus station and bought a ticket to Coleburn.
    The bus driver asked me,
"Do you take photos of distillery?"
He asked me about my cameras. I thought his hobby would be taking photos.
When I got off in Coleburn, he said,
"Go this way. So you can see a distillery."
I walked the way among trees, and then I saw the beautiful kiln designed by Charles Doig.

    The Mysterious Distillery(31 Oct 2001)

Finally, I arrived at the guesthouse I booked. In a second, I left my luggage and went to Glen Moray Distillery without break. The sun had gone west. I was walking west along railway like chasing the sun.
When I passed Elgin Station, I saw a malt kiln.
“Why, it’s too close. The distance between the town to Glen Moray Distillery is about 2km on the map. Really mysterious.”
That malt kiln was not Glen Moray Distillery. There is no building of distillery at the site near a crossing without the malt kiln and pigeons made nests in the kiln. Obviously, it wasn’t the operational distillery. It seemed to be a construction firm office and a place to put materials. I didn’t know about this distillery.
I wasn’t able to speak English, but I wanted to know about this distillery. I mustered up enough courage to ask to office staffs about distillery. So, the woman staff said that it seemed to be old distillery but she didn’t know when it was build and closed, and it was called “Grain Store”.
In UK, people continue to use old buildings, so there are some old warehouses and malt burns of distilleries. After I came back to Japan, I looked for information about that distillery. However I wasn’t able to find information. I think it may be a grain store as the name suggests or a flour mill, not a distillery, but the shape of pagoda roof is similar to the malt kiln which Charles C. Doig designed. It is shrouded in mystery.

    Linkwood Distillery(1 Nov 2001)

It was the last day in Scotland. For me, it was my first trip to abroad and first trip to go to distilleries. There was enough time by the train to Aberdeen, so I went to Linkwood Distillery by walk.
The way to distillery, I passed by the old farm and old bridge. When I arrived at Linkwood Distillery, I saw really beautiful malt kiln. I think malt kiln is the symbol of distillery.
This tour started with the beautiful kiln in Strathisla Distillery and ended with the beautiful kiln in Linkwood Distillery.
