Pulteney Distillery(6 May 2003)
スコットランドで英国本島最北端の蒸留所、PulteneyはWickのPulteney Townと呼ばれる現在の中心地から少し離れた古くからの町にある。この蒸留所の特徴はポットスティルの形。ウォッシュスティルは非常に個性的な形状をしている。これを見ると設計者はちょっと頑固な(ひねくれた？)性格の人だろうと想像してしまう。
the most northerly distillery on the Scottish mainland, Pulteney Distillery lies in Pulteney Town, Wick. Their pot still is very unique shape. I think the desinger of pot still is really obstinacy (or prejudiced?) when I see the pot still.

語源をノルウェーの言葉”Vik”に持つWickは古くから北の港町として栄え、1800年代後半はニシン漁の主要基地として発展した。最盛期には約1000隻の漁船がWickを基地にしていた。漁師の数は約6,000人に達した。また関連産業である網、塩、樽製造が発展し、それらに約6,000人が従事していた。Cooperだけで約300人いたというからその規模は大変大きなものだったのだろう。そしてその当時は40以上のPubがあり、またそれらに供給するために地元にエール醸造所もあったという。現在は人口約8,000人の静かな北の港町になっている。
Wick, which name is coming from the Norse “Vik”, is a old port town in northern of Scotland. It developed as a thriving herring port in the end of 1800s. There were about 1000 fishing boats operating near Wick. The population of fishermen in Wick was about 6000 and there were another 6000 workers who worked making nets, barrels, and gutted, salted, and layered the herrings. It would be a huge industory because there were about 300 coopers in the town.
At that time, there were more than 40 public houses and some breweries which was provided them. Now, Wick is quiet town and population is about 8000.
