Caol Ila Distillery(20 April 2004)
Port Askaigの町から北へ約1kmの海岸沿いの狭い平地にあるCaol Ila蒸留所。その名前は目の前を流れるアイラ海峡から来ている。
創業は1846年、その後何度もオーナーが代わり、1879年には1回目の建て替え、1927年にDCL(UDの前身)に買収された後、1930～1937年までは操業停止と順調とは言えない歴史を持っている。1972～1974年の大規模な建て替えでウェアハウス以外はすべて建て直され、UDの共通仕様のStill Houseを始め、近代的な蒸留所となった。生産量も島の蒸留所の中で最大規模となっている。個人的には古い写真でしか見ることの出来ないキルンを残しておいて欲しかったが・・・。
Caol Ila Distillery lies about 1km north of Port Askaig.It named from Sound of Islay.
Distillery was established in 1846. After that, some owners owned Caol Ila Distillery. It was rebuilded and expanded in 1879.
In 1927 DCL(UDV) acquired Caol Ila Distillery. And it was mothballed from 1930 to 1937.
In 1972, distillery was rebuilded again, most buildings were rebuilded, except some warehouses, and equipments were changed, It became a modern distillery. Now, annual output of Caol Ila is the highlest in Isle of Islay.
For me, I wanted to remain the beautiful KILN which we can see the old photograph.

Port Askaigは島に2つある主要港のうちの1つで1700年代から英国本島との連絡船が発着していた。現在もObanやKennacraigとを結ぶ大型フェリーや目の前のJuraとを結ぶ小型フェリーが発着する。にもかかわらず、町は非常に小さい。港関係の施設以外には、1軒のホテル、一軒のコンビニエンスストア・・・と言えるかどうかわからないけど食料品や日用品を売っているPost Office兼任の店。そして1934年に設立されたIslay Lifeboatの赤い屋根の建物。
潮騒と海鳥の声しか聞こえないような静かな町も英国本島へ向かうフェリーが入港したときは大型の家畜やウィスキー、原料を運ぶトレーラーが何台も乗降し、騒がしくなる。
Port Askaig is one of two main port in Isle of Islay. Ships from mainland have called here since 1700s. There are some ferries to Oban, Kintyre and Jura.
However, Port Askaig is really small. There is one hotel, one shop, some buildings of port, and red roofed building of Islay Lifeboat, established in 1934.
The town is really quiet, you can hear a sound of the sea and song of sea birds. but when ferries arrive and some big lorries which carry material and whisky ride and get off the ferry, the town is really uproarious.
